On March 14, an Azerbaijan court extended Republican Alternative female viagra jelly (REAL) Chairman Ilgar Mammedov’s pretrial detention by two months [REF/RL report, in Azerbaijani]. Mammedov was first detained by police on February 4, 2013. He is charged under Articles 233 (organizing or actively participating in the actions causing violation of public order) and 315.2 (resistance or application of violence concerning the representative of authority) of Azerbaijan’s Criminal Code. These charges stem from the January 23-24 protests in Ismayilli, which Mammedov allegedly instigated from Baku. On January 24, the day after the protests broke out, Mammedov traveled to Ismayilli, but was expelled from the city by local law enforcement upon arrival. Mammedov is an active blogger [blog in Russian] and coordinated [COE information] the Council of Europe’s School of Politics in Azerbaijan. He is running for president in the 2013 presidential election, to be held this October.
Ilgar Mammedov was able to get an open letter to Turan News Agency from jail. According to Contact.az [report, in English], Mammedov writes: “From my prison cell I am looking with a special feeling at the international community’s attempts to flirt with the Azerbaijani stupid dictatorship that brazenly challenges the world community and its citizens.”
On March 14, an Azerbaijan court also reviewed a petition from Tofig Yagublu to replace his pretrial detention with house arrest. The Nesimi District Court rejected the petition [Mediaforum report, in Azerbaijani]. On March 18, his arrest term was extended by 2 months [contact.az]. Yagublu was arrested on the same day as Mammedov [TLDR report] and on the same charges, although Yagublu and Mammedov are not affiliated with each other and independently traveled to Ismayilli. Yagublu’s lawyer, Akif Alizade, intends to file a complaint on this matter in the European Court of Human Rights. Yagublu’s entire family has been facing intense pressure and persecution [TLDR report].
