August 2012-present – Harassment of Yagublu Family -The Yagublu family is active in the opposition party Musavat. Since August 25, 2012 they have faced unprecedented pressure. Nigar Yagublu (currently serving a 2-year, 6-month term of imprisonment) – On August 25, 2012, a car accident killed Musavat Party Assembly member Aydin Ajalov. Musavat youth activist Nigar Yagublu, who does not have a driver’s license, was in the same vehicle as Ajalov and according to some sources may have been driving. The vehicle, Peugeot 206, collided with a 5320 Kamaz truck around the 13th kilometer of the

Baku-Shamakhi highway. On September 11, 2012 Nigar was arrested and sentenced to two months of pretrial detention, awaiting trial for violating Article 263.2 of Azerbaijan’s criminal code: Infringement of traffic rules the results in the someone’s death. In response to the two-month pretrial detention sentence, Nigar’s father Tofig Yagublu said: “This is an issue of getting revenge on our family. In general have you ever seen someone get pre-trial detention for violating traffic rules? Daily there are accidents, deaths, injuries, but this does not occur. The only true fact is that Nigar Yagublu was in the vehicle. Everything else being said is slander, and she is not to blame, simply people in the upper echelons of the government found out about this accident and gave orders [unofficial translation].” On December 19, 2012 she was convicted and sentenced to two years and six month of imprisonment. She is currently appealing her sentence. In early March, an agreement was reached that allows for her release for 12 hours every day. She is able to spend this time with her family and then returns to the penal colony in the evening. Nargiz Yagublu is an activist from Musavat Party. She was detained during the Saturday, January 26 protests in Baku and held until in detention until Monday January 28. Nearly all of the Jan. 26 protesters who were detained were taken to court on the same day. Only Nargiz and N!DA activist Zaur Gurbanli were held until Jan. 28 to be taken to court.
